It was my last day in Florence, Italy. I had already seen so many gorgeous buildings, pieces of art, and beautiful streets, but I still didn’t have a photograph that I was truly happy with. Someone recommended me to go to the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte, a small church on a hill just outside of Firenze’s city centre, to see the Gregorian chanting right after the evening mass. On the way up I was blown away by the stunning view and I decided that I wanted to get a shot of the sunset from there. So after experiencing the Gregorian chanting in the church I went down to Piazzale Michelangelo and pushed my way through the masses of selfie-taking-tourists. From there it was very simple. I took three shots to get the panoramic view and that was it. It’s always nerve wrecking when opening the files on my computer -sometimes it’s hard to see from the camera if the photo looks good- but this time I was incredibly happy. It’s absolutely one of my favourite photographs I have ever taken.
“To see the sun sink down, drowned on his pink and purple and golden floods, and overwhelm Florence with tides of color that make all the sharp lines dim and faint and turn the solid city to a city of dreams, is a sight to stir the coldest nature.”
– Mark Twain
